SOLAR CELL TESTED IN SPACE

Advanced Ceramics Report, July, 1991

A solar cell developed at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) in Golden, Colorado, USA, for the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is being tested in space after being launched on a satellite in early May.

The NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, is funding research at SERI to improve the efficiency of indium phosphide cells. The material is not widely used in earth-bound photovoltaic cells because of its high cost. However, it does tolerate high levels of radiation and therefore is potentially suitable for space applications, SERI says.
