Resistance of the ceramic silicon nitride to fracture and erosion will be studied under a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) announced by Allied Signal Inc and the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. The research could lead to more durable ceramic pumps for pipelines, tools for oil and gas drilling, and components for cars, trucks, helicopters and other vehicles that operate in environments containing sand or other fine particles, says Argonne.
