Corning expands LCD glass manufacturing capacity

Corning Inc plans to expand its Japanese manufacturing capacity with the construction of a glass melting unit. This will produce precision flat glass used in the manufacture of active-matrix liquid crystal displays (LCDs). A leading producer of LCD glass, Corning is to invest over GBP200 million in its subsidiary Corning Japan KK by the year 2000. This will provide integrated production, from glass melt to finished product, and will quadruple production capacity. At present precision-drawn flat sheets are produced in the USA and shipped to Japan for further fabrication and processing.
