SUPERCONDUCTORS - Sumitomo Electric sets high field performance records with superconducting coils

Advanced Ceramics Report, May, 1996

Sumitomo Electric Industries has set a number of records following the testing of the high field performance of two of its high Tc superconducting coils. The first coil, consisting of 17 double pancakes, has winding dimensions of 40 mm inner diameter, 108 mm outer diameter and 113 mm overall length. Each double pancake, wound with silver sheathed (Bi,Pb)2Sr2C2Ca2Cu3 O10 (BSCCO-2223) tapes, is react-and-wind processed. In total the coil contains approxi- mately 1200 m of the superconductor and weighs approximately 7 kg. The coil was tested in the temperature range from 4.2-77K coupled to a cryocooler where it generated 2.0 T at 15 K. When operating continuously at 18K for 50 hours, it generated 1.9 T. In a 22.45 T background field of the Hybrid III magnet, the coil reached...
