Miniaturizing a power source.

Scientists at Motorola Labs in the USA have demonstrated a prototype of a micro-fluid fuel delivery system, based on a ceramic, for a miniature direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). Motorola hopes that the miniaturized fuel cell will one day replace batteries in consumer electronic devices. Such fuel cells would offer an efficient means of producing electricity from methanol and provide electrical power for many more hours than conventional batteries.

Motorola's initial strategy is to develop a hybrid energy source, which combines a miniature fuel cell with a rechargeable battery for peak power demands.
