Feasibility study of femoral knee component.

The US company Encore Orthopedics Inc has recently been granted approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct a feasibility clinical study on a ceramic femoral knee component used in total knee replacement surgery.

This clinical study is the initial step in gaining clearance from the FDA to commercially distribute the product in the USA.

The implant, fabricated from zirconia by Saint Gobain Desmarquest of Evruex, France, has a geometry similar to the cobalt-chromium alloy femoral component of Encore's knee system, which has the trademark Foundation. This allows it to be used in conjunction with the Foundation tibial and patellar components in treating patients suffering with arthritis of the knee joint.
