Thermographic inspection of space shuttle insulation.(AEROSPACE)

Thermal Wave Imaging Inc (TWI), USA, has recently gained a contract from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to assist the space agency in developing procedures and best practices for thermographic inspection of the thermal protection system (TPS) on the space shuttle orbiter.

The contract is part of NASA's effort to improve pre-flight inspection in the wake of the Columbia accident in February 2003. Such inspections are even more pertinent now, given the recent problems with the Discovery space shuttle, which experienced insulation foam falling from its main fuel tank and colliding with its protective ceramic panels during take off on 26 July 2005.
