Heat-resistant engine cover.(Automotive)

Advanced Composites Bulletin, October, 2003

A glass fibre-reinforced nylon is said to provide high heat- and chemical-resistance for air intake manifold components and two rocker covers in a new sports utility vehicle (SUV) produced by Porsche.

For the air intake manifold components, the composite used is a 30% glass fibre-reinforced Zytel nylon from DuPont; the same grade is also used for the two rocker covers, except that the glass fibre content is slightly higher at 35%.

In addition to heat-resistance, the reinforced nylon is said to have resistance to hydrolysis and hot oil, and to feature high burst strength (even after ageing). The composite is also said to be easy to weld.

The new automobile is named the Cayenne, and is Porsche's first venture into the lucrative SUV market. An...
