Lightweight reinforced epoxy components for rockets.(Aerospace)

ATK Composites, USA, a division of Alliant Techsystems (ATK), has recently supplied Boeing Co, USA, with a number of composite components for use on its Delta rockets.

Most recently, the company, from Clearfield, Utah, supplied a 4 m diameter composite thermal shield and other components to Boeing for its Delta IV Medium RS-68 rocket. The rocket was recently used to launch the US Air Force's Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS), DSCS III B63.

The high-strength, lightweight thermal shield protected the rocket's main engine during lift-off. ATK Composites also supplied the rocket's centre body, liquid oxygen skirt for the common booster core, a 6.7 m interstage that joined the common booster core and the second stage, as well as an 11.6 m long...
