Plastic pulley replaces aluminium.(Office/retail/domestic)

An injection-moulded pulley made of glass fibre reinforced nylon is now being used across the range of Merloni Elettrodomestici's Hotpoint domestic washing machines. The composite pulley, made of DuPont's Zytel grade nylon resin, is said to be a cost-effective alternative to cast aluminium counterparts without compromising mechanical properties.

Rolinx Plastics Co Ltd, Manchester, UK, carried out design, analyses and manufacture of the new pulley, in conjunction with Merloni Elettrodomestici UK.

Most domestic washing machines use a pulley to transmit torque from the motor to spin the washing machine's inner drum. In order to act as an effective replacement for an aluminium pulley, the dimensions of the Zytel part needed to remain the same.
