Advanced Composites Bulletin, March, 2006

Ford Motor Co (USA), Aston Martin (UK), and Sotira (France): F3P-RTM process for an eight-panel, Class A application for the Aston Martin DB9. This was the overall winner in this section. The panels are made of chopped fibre preforms formed using a robotized F3P Ford Programmable Preforming Process, which generates little scrap material (under 1%) and reduces volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, the developers say. Once formed, the preforms are used in a resin transfer moulding (RTM) process to obtain Class A parts directly, the companies say. The robots are programmable offline, which also saves time. Sotira currently produces about 15 000 parts a year using the system, and plans to reach 34 000 parts annually.
