Solvent-free epoxy prepreg for aeroplane fairings.(Materials)
Advanced Composites Bulletin, November, 2006
Yokohama Rubber Co Ltd, Japan, has developed an environmentally friendly and adhesive-free prepreg for use on composite components for the Airbus A380.
Specifically, Yokohama's prepreg--made of epoxy resin reinforced with carbon fibre--is for fairings (streamlined trim for reducing drag) on the aircraft. The wing fairings on the A380 comprise honeycomb cores sandwiched between panels of fibre-reinforced plastic.
The company says it has eliminated the need for using environmentally unsound solvents to melt the prepreg for moulding--simply heating the material is sufficient. Similarly, heat alone can be applied to fix the honeycomb core without adhesives. This removes a step in fairing assembly and thus increases productivity.
