Foamed sheet moulding composites.(MATERIALS)

Advanced Composites Bulletin, April, 2008

The Institute of Plastics Processing (IKV) at Aachen University, Germany, has developed a range of composite materials.

These include:

* integrally manufactured foamed sheet moulding composites (SMCs) with solid face sheets;

* in situ polymerized resin transfer moulded products with thermoplastic matrix;

* hollow structures made of continuous reinforced thermoplastics.

While at the JEC Show, held at the start of this month in Paris, France, IKV also used the opportunity to showcase a liquid composite moulding (LCM) process called gap impregnation. Gap impregnation facilitates a fast impregnation by using special moulds with an adaptive cavity.
