The president of Pertamina until early 1998, Abda'oe is the chairman of the government's Natuna Island Development Agency. This agency has been pushing development of Natuna's huge gas reserves, in a venture led by Exxon and to invest over $40 billion. Abda'oe said in July 1998 that the venture's big LNG project could start up in 2007 - three years behind schedule - with the hope that by then demand for LNG in the Far East and the Indian sub-continent would have recovered its strength. (Exxon holds 50% in the venture, with Mobil having 26% and Pertamina try-ing to sell part of its 24% equity to a group of Japanese companies).
