With its Energy and Mines Minister Chakib Khelil being OPEC's current president, Algeria is keen on getting oil prices to be defended through OPEC and non-OPEC production cuts during the first half of 2002. Low oil prices cause the value of Algeria's exports of pipeline gas, LNG and NGLs to all and the country depends heavily on petroleum revenues. Algeria depends mainly on the European market for oil and gas exports (see survey of Algeria in Vol. 56, Nos. 5-8).

Abdelhak Bouhafs was sacked as CEO of Sonatrach at the end of February.
