Potentially the most serious alternative to oil is energy efficiency, which saves fuel and money and is the best option of the environment. Japan is the most energy efficient member of the OECD and the IEA, followed by the Europe. The US lags behind even some of the newly industrialized countries (NICS) of Asia.

The power blackout in US north - east and the adjacent part of the Canada in Aug.2003 was a shock and its real reason are yet to be explained properly to the public. This, combined with a shocking energy crisis and very high power and petroleum prices in California in 2000 and 9/11 should have prompted the Americans to become more efficient in their use of fossil fuels.
