In the short-term, Turkmenistan's gas exports will continue to depend on the Russian system of pipelines, run by Gazprom. With the country consuming 8 BCM/year of its gas, its exports are averaging about 60 BCM/year. Most of these exports now go to Ukraine, Russia and other CIS members. Turkmen exports to West Europe average 11 BCM/year and involve Russian gas swapped in Russia by Gazprom.

Gas exports outside the CIS have been priced at $75 per thousand cubic metres. The price of Turkmen gas paid by Ukraine and other CIS members is much lower - in 1993 reported at $9 per thousand cubic metres. Within Turkmenistan, the price is between $1.5-2.5 per thousand cubic metres. CIS and domestic sales are in local currencies tied to the rouble.
