Globus Canning Industry Reszvenytarsasag signed a preliminary deal Nov. 15 with Dutch consumer products conglomerate Unilever to acquire Hungarian rights to the Iglo frozen food brand plus a coldstore in the southern Hungarian city of Baja.

This is the company's first venture into frozen food. Established Globus operations include ready meals (sauces and hot-sandwich pastes), canned meats (including liver pates), seasonings (mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise); canned fruits and fruit juices and canned vegetables.

In 1999 canned fruits and vegetables accounted for 27% of the turnover, canned meats 25%, seasonings 25%, ready meals 11%, pickles 10% and fruit juices two percent. Exports accounted for 27% of parent company revenues. The major export markets...
