Head them off at the landing ports. That's how to stop illegal fishing operations, a large group of countries has agreed at a high-level meeting in Rome under the auspices of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The decision to start a process leading to adoption of a binding international agreement for control measures in ports where fish is landed, transhipped or processed came during the 27th meeting of FAO's Committee on Fisheries (COFI) held from March 5-9, and attended by representatives from 131 countries and the European Commission.
Additional consultations will be held later this year and in 2008 to generate a draft version of the agreement, which will then be presented to COFI for final approval at the body's next...
