When Checkfree signed a deal with Bank of America to assume the bank's electronic billpay service this spring, some of the torpor surrounding the electronic bill payment market lifted.

Then, in May, the consolidator announced a merger with former foe Transpoint and the market perked up again. A temporary blip on the developmental monitor or indication of a permanent shift into action? It's too soon to say.

But Bank of America's role as patron and partner has added the gravitas of scale by nearly doubling the active users to Checkfree's 3.2 million base of consumers....
