Senate Banking Committee Chairman Paul Sarbanes (D.-Md.) can be a very determined man, and he was in top form the day the terrorists attacked the Pentagon.

The morning of Sept. 11, Sarbanes had called for a hearing regarding the Superior Federal thrift failure. He wanted to hear from the regulators about this situation.

Attendees reported that when the news of the attack was delivered to Sarbanes during the hearing, the senator told the witnesses and others attending that the work of the U.S. Senate wouldn't stop because of some terrorists.

After Ellen Seidman, director of the Office of Thrift Supervision, had launched into her testimony, a Capitol Hill policeman entered the hearing room and gestured to get the chairman's attention.
