While it's true that Pittsburgh's PNC Financial Services Group made the Top Performers list this year because of extraordinary events (most notably, the sale of half its stake in investment manager BlackRock, Inc. for an after-tax gain of $1.3 billion), over the past few years the company, led by CEO James Rohr, has taken a series of steps to boost performance across the board.
