JAMAICA: US$20 MILLION LOAN FOR POVERTY ALLEVIATION.

The World Bank has approved a US$20 million loan to Jamaica to finance poverty alleviation programs and sustainable development, CANA reported October 8. The money will be used to establish a Social Investment Fund (SIF) whose primary goal is to help reduce poverty and create an environment for sustainable national development.

Resources will be channeled to community-based social and economic infrastructure, social assistance and organizational strengthening projects sponsored by public, private, or voluntary organizations. The total project cost is an estimated U$50 million (US$10 from the Government, US$10 from the Inter-American Development Bank, US$5 million from other sources).
