Empresas de Motores Taino, a state entity, will assemble diesel engines for heavy trucks made by Italy's Iveco Aifo SpA, a subsidiary of Italy's Fiat SpA. Taino will also assemble diesel engine pumps made by Italy's Lombardini Fim SpA. Cuba has purchased hundreds of Fiat-made vehicles (vans, trucks, rice harvesters) during the past four years.
Cubalse SA, another Government entity, said the company would by up to 1,000 Fiat vehicles in 1999 for use by Micar, a car rental company. Lazaro Rodriguez, general manager of Micar, said that 500 Fiat vehicles were already in use.
