Three top execs of Cable & Wireless Jamaica have been made redundant, as the company prepares for foreign competition now that the telecom marketplace has been opened, reports CMC (Dec. 2, 2001). The Sunday Gleaner reported that CEO Gary Barrow replaced the trio with new execs who will emphasize sales and service. Shortly after Barrow was named to head C&W Jamaica four months ago, he raided the new mobile telephone company, Digicel, and recruited its director of business development, Ian Neita to be C&W's senior V.P. for sales and services. Digicel had itself raided C&W for top staff ahead of its start-up earlier this year. Digicel, in less than a year, has over 160,000 subscribers, vs. C&W which has stabilized at 320,000.
