METRO INVESTMENT AT RD$1.5 BILLION. Spending on Santo Domingo's first Metro line has reached RD$1.505 billion as of March 22, reports Listin Diario (April 17, 2006). Metro boss and chief architect Diandino Pena said the government has spent RD$1.2 billion on the project itself and RD$232 million on supplies and "other expenses".

The Metro is the largest construction project ever undertaken here, with 5,000 people employed. The Number One line is supposed to open in the spring of 2008. Total reorganization of public transportation in Santo Domingo is expected to take 25 years at a cost of US$700 million.
