Guatemala moved closer to implementing a stalled regional free trade deal with the US after its Congress approved laws Washington had cited as a prerequisite for joining, reports Reuters (May 18,2006). "It's a huge step forward," said U.S. embassy spokesman Ryan Rowlands. Guatemalan exporters claim the country has lost 40,000 jobs and US$60 million in direct investment in the textile sector alone because of the delay.
