L-1 Identity Solutions Inc., which produces identification cards and credentials, said it has won a State Dept contract for a new passport card program valued at about US$107 million over five years, reports AP (March 12, 2008). The card, part of the State Dept's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, will be valid for land and sea travel between the U.S.

and Canada, the Caribbean, Bermuda and Mexico. L-1 said the cards are intended to be a less expensive and more portable alternative to the passport book that will provide faster border crossing times and ease traffic congestion at land border crossings.
