Consulting firm Adam Smith Institute for the State-run Electricity Companies (CDEEE) says the DR needs to install 3,135 mw of power by 2016, increasing from the current 1,776.4 mw to keep up with energy needs, reports Clave (May 29, 2009). The data is part of a March 2009 study "Projections for the Demand of Energy and Potential Energy Required for the Period 2009-2016." Jose Luis Moreno San of the UASD state university's Energy Institute said at least 1,600 mw should have been installed since 2004, but nothing has been done.

He warned that the electric supply could be reduced even further if mining company Barrick Gold is successful in negotiating the purchase of 276.3 mw from the generators Estrella del Mar, Estrella del Norte and Monte Rio plants. The private...
