Mining company Barrick Gold has purchased the Monte Rio power company, reports Listin Diario (June 10, 2009). Operation of the company, which was owned by a group headed by former National Business Council (Conep) president Elena Viyella de Paliza, will continue through 2010. The plant, which will continue running as a private entity, was purchased in order to ensure that Barrick Gold's Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corp.
(PVDC) receives an energy supply. Barrick also bought two floating power generators that will be installed by 2011.
