Some 80% of Dominicans have a phone, whether mobile or a LAN line, reports DR1 Daily News (June 5, 2009). The Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL) says in 2000 there were 1.6 million phone lines, growing to more than 8 million by 2009. The DR's telecom sector grew by 21.4% during the first three months of 2009.
