Surendra Engineering of Maharashtra, India won a US$12 million contract to modernize a sugar factory as the country seeks to boost sugar production, reports AP (June 6, 2009). The state-owned sugar company says the European Union will help fund the project. Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud said it will produce crystal sugar slated for US and European markets.
Guyana is the Caribbean's largest sugarproducer but production has slipped; it churned out 205,000 metric tons of sugar last year vs. a projected 290,000 metric tons.
