Lorraine Vissepo, spokeswoman for Plaza Las Americas (the island's largest shopping center with 2.1 million sq ft of retail space) said 17 stores are confirmed to either open this year or early in 2010, nine which will open within the next few months, reports Caribbean Business (May 28, 2009).

But seven other stores couldn't weather the economic recession and soaring costs of doing business and have decided to shut operations.
