The National Organic Standards Board has recommended a mandatory standards and certification system for the organic food industry to the USDA. The proposed system covers processing and labeling of organic foods for both handlers and food processors. The board has considered the development of a national list of natural and synthetic substances to guide the classification of foods as organic.
Advisory group sends organic standards recommendations to USDA.
A MANDATORY STANDARDS AND CERTIFICATION system for the processing and labeling of organic foods is in the works, with the National Organic Standards Board forwarding its recommendations for organic handlers--which includes food processors--to the USDA. (NOSB is a USDA advisory group.)
