Many food companies are developing their own high-intensity sweeteners in anticipation of the product's increased popularity among American consumers. However, the FDA has been cautious in approving new sweetener products developed by food companies. The FDA has only approved aspartame, saccharin and acesulfame but is considering others.
New approvals, new forms, and new food and beverage applications all characterized the market for high-intensity sweeteners in recent months.
There aren't a lot of players in the strictly regulated U.S. market. Only aspartame, saccharin and acesulfame K have been given the nod by the FDA. Several other companies continue to wait for word from the FDA, and there's some buzzing among industry sources that an approval or two may be...
