Organic standards go national at last.(Agriculture Dept to launch uniform standards for organic food products)

The Agriculture Dept will announce a national certification program for organic food products in summer 1999. The development is a culmination of roughly 10 years of efforts to establish a uniform standard for organic food and is being hailed by organic food growers, processors and consumers who have waited for the national program since 1990, when the Organic Foods Production Act was enacted. The program will simplify matters for the sector which has had to deal with 45 major certification programs including 12 state and 33 privately run programs.

But debate continues over natural, synthetic ingredients.
