American obesity is ballooning, according to the U.S. government's latest health and nutrition survey. More than 30 percent of American adults, or 59 million people, were obese in 2000, compared with 23 percent just six years earlier. Weight is also a problem for America's children, 9 million (or 15 percent) of whom are classified as overweight or obese in 2000, triple the rate of 1980. Even more disturbing, 10 percent of preschoolers are chubby.

As American waistlines expand and aging Zoomers zoom in on their cardiovascular health, PepsiCo Inc.'s Frito-Lay North America division, Plano, Texas, is going on the offensive. It will eliminate hydrogenated oils and instead use trans fat-free corn oil in the production of all Original Doritos, Tostitos and Cheetos....
