Efforts to control and monitor the amount of toxic material found in the Great Lakes basin have started. The Great Lakes Initiative is an important water quality regulation proposed by the EPA. Together with the approval of the 1990 drafted Great Lakes Water Quality Guidance, the regulation contains detailed procedures for calculating water quality. The state is required to follow such procedures to protect humans and wildlife from toxic pollutants found in the lake.
