The Indiana Dept. of Transportation decided to evaluate traffic safety hardware to determine if they met American Assn. of State Highway and Transportation Officials standards. The agency discovered that use of high-strength breakaway square posts could significantly reduce U-channel quantity while enabling the mounting of more than one sign on square posts.

An important element in developing a safe highway system is the proper construction and maintenance of traffic signs. Traffic signs are a primary source of information to motorists. As the population percentage of drivers age 55 and over continues to rise (27.2 percent in 1993 to a projected 38.9 percent in 2030), signs are getting bigger and brighter.
