Montana U.S. highway 93: public involvement that works.

Citizen participation played a key role in the success of the Montana US 93 highway project. Residents initially opposed the project due to concerns that highway improvements would lead to overgrowth and the destruction of the area's natural beauty. However, the organization of activities such as workshops, meetings with citizen committees and highway design courses alleviated people's concerns and eliminated opposition to the project.

In northwest Montana, uneasy feelings have subsided. Most of the wounds have healed. In fact, the first phase of construction on picturesque U.S. 93 - a project that has been one of the nation's most controversial in recent years - is under way.
