The city of Fremont, CA, awarded the contract to collect and dispose household refuse to Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) after the latter promised to collect recyclables such as glass, plastic and newspaper, using just one garbage truck. Previously, more than one truck was used in performing these services. BFI also promised the city that its proposal would save residents more than $3.5 million annually. Since the waste collection contract was awarded to BFI, Fremont's residential recycling rate has gone beyond 50%. It is now currently serving 45,000 single-family residences, 300 multi-family complexes and 5,500 businesses in the city.
