The biggest news since my last column is certainly the federal court decision to break up the software giant Microsoft. Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson of the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia found Microsoft guilty of antitrust violations and ordered the firm to be split into two separate companies. The first would be a company that essentially would handle Microsoft's Windows operating systems (Windows 98, 2000 Professional, NT, CE). The second, an applications company, would handle office productivity and server applications, Internet Explorer, and development software. According to Judge Jackson, Microsoft used its monopoly powers to illegally stifle competition in the microcomputer software market. Consequently, he ordered it split in two.
