The Bush administration is revising a controversial rule to reduce the arsenic levels in drinking water. Earlier, the administration delayed the rule that the EPA drafted late in the Clinton administration. EPA Administrator Christie Whitman said the new standard would take effect in 2006, when EPA's previous proposal was scheduled to go into place.
EPA is asking the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to expedite review of a range of 3 to 20 parts per billion for the establishment of a new drinking water standard. NAS will examine studies regarding health effects received after the previous comment period closed. It had reported that the present standard of 50 ppb is too high, but it did not recommend a level.
