Homeland Security issues more grants for port security.(Washington Report)

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is distributing $179 million in grants for dockside and perimeter security at ports and terminals.

The department said the awards would enable security upgrades such as harbor patrol boats, surveillance equipment, and the construction of command and control facilities.

"DHS is committed to further securing our nation's highways, mass transit systems, railways, waterways, and pipelines, each of which is critical to ensuring the freedom of mobility and economic growth," says secretary Tom Ridge. "These projects are critical to the mission of securing our ports."

The grants went to 442 projects in 326 locations, proposed by 235 organizations. DHS awarded $170 million in port security grants in June...
