NUCLEAR SAFETY: EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT COMMITTEE ADOPTS REPORT

Summary:

Members of the European Parliament's Committee on Energy Research and Technology, meeting in Brussels on June 17, adopted a report tabled by Gordon Adam (Soc; UK) on the safety of nuclear installations in the European Community. The document, which is likely to be presented to the July 6-10 session of the full Parliament, called on the Community "to play a motor role in the harmonisation of safety standards promoting cooperation between Member States".

In its committee stage the Adam report had become a vehicle for MEPs to express concerns on a wide range of nuclear issues (the french Superphenix fast breeder reactor project; the safety of nuclear installations in Hungary and Yugoslavia; etc.).
