MAIL ORDER SALES: EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT CALLS FOR BETTER CONSUMER PROTECTION

The European Commission's proposal to regulate, at EC level, mail order and other kinds of sales across national borders was approved in first reading by the European Parliament during its May 26 plenary session, albeit with a series of amendments designed to improve consumer protection.
During the debate in Strasbourg on May 25, the Parliament's rapporteur on the draft Directive on distance selling and back-up Recommendation imposing codes of conduct, Ria Oomen-Ruijten (EPP, Nl), told MEPs she was pleased to see the Commission recognising that self-regulation through codes of conduct along the lines of the UK model was an effective means of control.
