CONSUMER ACTION PROGRAMME: EUROPEAN COMMISSION TO PROPOSE NEW THREE-YEAR PLAN

Summary:
The three-year action programme on consumer policy looks set for approval at the European Commission's weekly meeting on July 22. It will comprise only one legislative proposal, with regard to allegations on food products, and, in particular, several White Papers, which amply illustrate the Commission's current sensitivity on the subject of consumer protection.
The three-year plan on consumer policy will be deliberately quite general, because the uncertain outcome of the Maastricht Treaty ratification process together with the "sensitive" nature of consumer issues are sufficient to encourage the Commission to adopt a low profile.
