ENERGY/CO2 TAX: EUROPEAN ELECTRICITY COMPANIES CONFIRM OPPOSITION TO TAX

Summary:
Eleven European electricity companies* have reaffirmed their opposition to the European Commission's proposals for an energy/CO2 tax and suggested alternative measures which they claim would prove more cost-effective in limiting carbon dioxide emissions. Their proposal supports that presented to the Commission in April by the European electricity industry grouping, Eurelectric.
The 11 power companies, who between them provide around 40% of the European Community's electricity output and serve some 65 million customers, agreed at a conference hosted by PowerGen in London that the proposed tax would prove both unnecessary and ineffectual in reducing EC and global CO2 emissions but would, by contrast, undermine the competitivity of European industry....
