BEUC: CONSUMER LOBBY SPOTS FLAWS IN COMMISSION'S ACTION PLAN

Summary:

Unveiled by the European Commission on July 28, the three-year action alan (1993-95) for consumers has more than a few shortcomings, if the European Consumers' Organisation, BEUC, is to be believed. The consumer body has even drawn up a list of the sort of items that ought to have been included in the plan, which turns out to be a low-key affair, owing to lack of resources and lack of enthusiasm on the part of the Member States.

The section of the three-year plan devoted to new activities is "totally inadequate", says BEUC . What is missing in particular is:

-- more clarity concerning the fate of the Directive on the liability for providers of services;
