WILDLIFE: CONFUSION SURROUNDS LEGISLATION ON ENDANGERED SPECIES

Summary:

Does the European Commission intend to weaken EU legislation on the protection of wild animals? So alleged European animal protection associations - the IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare), the Eurogroup for Animal Welfare and Birdlife International - backed by former European Commissioner for the Environment Carlo Ripa di Meana, in Brussels on November 30. Non-governmental organisations are mainly concerned about the issue of whaling in the accession negotiations with Norway. The Commission categorically denied that it plans to water down any legislation on animal welfare.
